Eutrophication in drainage ditch Hollesley, Suffolk, England. Eutrophication is caused by the use of nitrate fertilisers in arable farming. Run off from the fields accumulates into drainage systems such as ditches and ponds and the added nutrients stimulate plant growth. The water surface becomes clogged with algae and this depletes available oxygen adversely effecting fish and other water creatures and plants.
